SME Case Study – Fire Claim, Nottinghamshire

In late 2022 Ambience Response were instructed by an insurer to assess and report on fire damage in a warehouse used for a joinery business.

Previously, the insurer’s loss adjuster had received a reinstatement schedule for £170,000 in a contractor tender process. It was suspected by the insurer that this scope of works may be excessive, and so Ambience was brought in to review and recommend an independent scope.

Ambience’s directly employed MCIOB chartered surveyor performed a full review of the damage against both policy and the existing proposed scope, and found that the scope was indeed excessive and unwarranted for the damage the warehouse had sustained, and the cover. As with all of our surveys we examined the property holistically and established that the loss event, the fire, had been largely contained in one area, and that entire warehouse roof was patched and stained due to age and poor maintenance, not the fire.

Ambience proposed a £25,000 scope of restoration works.

In this case, and once our report had been received, the insurer actually visited site with the Ambience surveyor to see for themselves why there was such a disparity between the initial scope and Ambience’s. Our insurer client agreed entirely with our findings, and authorised Ambience to proceed with restoration works.

In total our surveyor’s deep buildings knowledge and holistic assessment of the property damage against policy wording saved our insurance client £145,000.
